Autonomic Networking is meant to manage complexity. The name was chosen to reflect the function of the autonomic nervous system in the human body. By transferring more manual functions to involuntary control, additional resources (human and others) are made available to manage higher-level processes. The building block an autonomic networking architecture is the Autonomic Element, which relies on one or several control loops, reasoning and learning techniques

Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are two disruptive paradigms that are shaping the future networking landscape. SDN separates network’s control logic from the underlying routing and switching devices, whereas NFV allows for decoupling of physical network equipment from the services or functions that run on them, such that a given service can be decomposed into a set of virtual network functions, which could then be implemented in commodity hardware

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a paradigm where computers are used as proactive tools assisting people in their every day’s life, making it more comfortable. This technology, which includes the computational power and communication technologies embedded within our present mobile devices, should interact with us without noticing it. AmI is grounded on key technologies like Ubiquitous Computing, Ubiquitous Communication and Intelligent User Interfaces

Tecno-economic aspects of the Future Internet. The Future Internet will see management decisions to be taken and optimized, which leave the pure grounds of network management, since the commercial deployment and economic optimization will guide many operations. Therefore, the support for and integration of (a) cost-awareness, (b) incentives for service provisioning, (c) fulfilment schemes, (d) business policies, and (e) legal/regulative aspects determine a cross-disciplinary approach for the Future Internet.
